Beyond Biryani and Irani Chai: 42 Places That Tell Hyderabad's Real Food Story

Mention Hyderabad anywhere in the world and one dish inevitably dominates the conversation: Biryani. It is deservedly iconic, but it also overshadows one of India's most diverse culinary landscapes. To understand Hyderabad through its food is to look beyond a single pot of rice and meat. It is to wander through Irani cafés at dawn, linger over kebabs in the Old City after sunset, discover Yemeni restaurants in Barkas, drive out to highway dhabas on the city's fringes, and finish the evening with a scoop of sitaphal ice cream.
The Deccan has always been a crossroads. Traders from Persia and Arabia, soldiers from Central Asia, craftsmen from North India, local Telugu communities, Marathas, Kannadigas, and countless others all left their mark on the city's kitchens. Hyderabad's cuisine is not one tradition but many, layered over centuries of migration and adaptation.
Over the years, the Deccan Archive team has explored these neighbourhoods one meal at a time. This list is not ranked, sponsored, or generated from online ratings. It is simply a collection of places we genuinely enjoy returning to: restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and dhabas that together tell a richer story of Hyderabad than biryani ever could.
The Soul of the Old City
No part of Hyderabad preserves the city's culinary traditions better than the Old City. Here, recipes are often passed down through generations, and regulars order without looking at the menu.
Start at Nampally with Hotel Alhamdulillah, where the shami kebab, sheek kebab, haleem (available all year), and tala hua gosht showcase the robust flavours of old Hyderabad.
Seafood lovers should head to Al Barkath Fish Fry in Mallepally for prawns, fish fry, batair (quail), and one of the city's favourite versions of Chicken 65. Nearby, Moin Chakna is known for excellent kabab and boti, and Grand Hotel at Abids serves the best kheema roti for breakfast—a legendary homemade dish in Hyderabad.
For breakfast, Iqbal Café near Purani Haveli remains a classic. Their puri paired with tala hua gosht is a combination that has fuelled Hyderabadis for decades, while the khajoor deserves equal attention. Freshly baked naan from Munshi Naan is a staple in countless homes across the city, while Armaan Hotel continues to serve one of our favourite plates of tahari.
Bakeries, Cafés and Sweet Traditions
Hyderabad's bakery culture deserves a chapter of its own.
The chicken cutlet and chicken pie at Sarvi Bakery have become enduring favourites, while Rose Bakery continues to produce one of the city's finest egg puffs.
For refreshments, stop at Milan Juice Centre for fresh Mosambi juice or Nice Juice Centre for its celebrated Mango Malai. Those with a sweet tooth shouldn't miss the rich Khowa Jalebi from Burhanpur in Mallepally.
Dakhni Comfort Food
Some of Hyderabad's finest dishes are those rarely advertised.
Mann-o-Salwa serves an exceptional Bagara Dalcha, one of the defining dishes of Dakhni cuisine. At Dine Hill, order the Zeera Rice, Khatti Daal, and Tala Hua Gosht—a meal that perfectly captures everyday Hyderabadi comfort food. Another excellent Tahari can be found at Al Kareem in Asif Nagar, proving that every neighbourhood has its own interpretation of this humble classic.
Hyderabad's Arabian Connection
The historic settlement of Barkas introduced generations of Hyderabadis to Yemeni cooking, and today it remains one of the city's most distinctive food destinations.
Visit Al Wadi on a Friday for Lahsa and their celebrated Zurbian. At Al Yemeni, order Aqdah, Sughar, and Fahsa—slow-cooked dishes rich with spice and tradition.
Complete the meal with a cup of aromatic Ghawa from Al Askari in Barkas.
Tolichowki also reflects Hyderabad's cosmopolitan palate. At Ice and Spice, the Mutabbaq remains a favourite among regulars.
Kebabs, Grills and Meat Lovers' Paradise
Hyderabad has no shortage of places serving exceptional grilled meats.
Siddique Kabab Centre excels with its grill chicken and tandoori fish. Kabab-e-Jahangiri near Machli Kaman continues to draw crowds for its long Parathas paired with smoky kebabs. For another local classic, Al Akbar serves Chicken 65 alongside flaky Warqi Paratha. In Mehdipatnam, both Prince Hotel and Maks Kitchen offer excellent kebabs for different budgets and dining experiences, while Kabul Darbar introduces diners to beautifully prepared Afghani Pulao and Afghan-style kebabs. Those looking for larger sharing platters should visit Zouq in Banjara Hills for its impressive Metre Platter, or Spice 6 Arab Villagio for an excellent Arabian-style kebab platter.
Beyond Dakhni: Hyderabad's Global Appetite
Hyderabad has embraced international cuisines without losing its own identity.
Chopsticks remains a dependable choice for Devil Chicken and Pad Thai noodles.
For classic Indo-Chinese comfort food, Aqeeq serves mixed fried rice alongside chicken Manchurian. At Roastery Coffee House, we recommend the fish and chips and spaghetti aglio e olio with prawns—proof that Hyderabad's dining scene continues to evolve.
Meanwhile, 1885 NY Smash Burgers has earned a loyal following for one of the city's best smash burgers.
Snacks That Deserve a Detour
Some dishes are worth crossing the city for.
The Shawarma at Al Arabia in Mallepally remains one of our favourites. The Chole Kulche at Gokul Chat continue to attract long queues. At Agra Sweets near Sher-i-Batil Kaman, pair a refreshing lassi with one of their chaats. For something uniquely Hyderabadi, order the Marag Roti at Pista House Premium Lounge.
Seafood and Sweet Endings
Seafood lovers should not miss the Apollo Fish at Yousufain Fish Fry, while those willing to venture to Sangareddy will be rewarded with the golden prawns at Palace Hotel.
When it's time for dessert, Famous Ice Cream remains our favourite destination for sitaphal and chikoo ice cream, while Ohri's Eatmor continues to evoke nostalgia with its classic ice cream parlour experience.
The Weekend Drive
Some of the best meals require leaving the city behind.
The KGN FIFA Dhaba near Kohir Cross Road is one of those rare places where ordering almost anything from the menu is a safe bet.
Zamzam Dhaba is best known for its wide variety of egg preparations, while Yellow Dhaba in Moinabad serves consistently satisfying Indian cuisine—perfect after an evening drive.
Hyderabad, One Plate at a Time
The beauty of Hyderabad's food lies in its contradictions. A centuries-old Irani café sits beside a modern burger joint. Yemeni stews coexist with Indo-Chinese classics. Highway dhabas share the same city as elegant cafés, while family-run bakeries continue to produce recipes unchanged for generations.
Biryani may be Hyderabad's ambassador, but it is only the beginning of the conversation.
Order the shami kebab. Taste the tahari. Tear apart fresh naan. Sip ghawa in Barkas. Share an Afghani platter with friends. Drive out for prawns. End the evening with sitaphal ice cream. Only then do you begin to understand how this city truly eats.
