Kutubkhana
An initiative by The Deccan Archive Foundation
Kutubkhana is a long-term initiative focused on the preservation, digitization, and public access of libraries and archival collections in Hyderabad. The project addresses the physical deterioration of libraries while building systems that allow books, manuscripts, photographs, and related material to be accessed and used by students, researchers, and institutions.Kutubkhana is developed by Deccan Archive in collaboration with cultural partners and practitioners working across research, design, and documentation.

Why Libraries?
Libraries in Hyderabad hold significant literary, cultural, and historical material. Many of these collections remain underused due to restricted access, lack of infrastructure, and absence of preservation systems. When libraries are closed or poorly maintained, collections face gradual but irreversible loss.
Kutubkhana treats libraries as essential public infrastructure that supports education, research, and cultural continuity.
Abul Kalam Azad Oriental Research Institute, Public Garden
The only publicly accessible library among the three containing rare and fragile books and manuscripts but lacking formal preservation and digitization systems. The building shows signs of structural deterioration, including leaks and weakened ceilings.
Paltan Library, Malakpet
Closed to the public. Collections are largely intact but vulnerable due to prolonged lack of maintenance and preservation measures.
Adi Hindu Bhavan Library, Chaderghat
Closed to the public. Books and manuscripts are stored in unstable conditions and are exposed to environmental damage and pests.
